The Ley Community entered into an innovative project with EarthWatch,
a Conservation Charity run from Oxford, in 1997 whereby Ley Community
residents worked alongside international volunteers on a range of
conservation expeditions. The National Westminster Bank initially
funded the project for three years. The project was a huge success
and won one of the major awards in the National Charity Awards in
2001.
Subsequently, the Lottery Commission picked up the funding for a
further three years for the project. Twelve residents undertake a
two week placement each year in pairs as part of larger volunteer
groups. They return to the Ley Community full of the experience and
clearly benefit from the opportunity to be part of a project that
they would be unlikely to have been involved with but for the Ley
partnership with EarthWatch. |
